MONORAIL FACTS AND FIGURES - 4 From the Cabalmaster: The following list shows operating cost per vehicle-mile, with operators listed according to rank, for U.S. and Japanese fixed-guideway urban transit. We note that the "winners" would probably lead anyone's short list of "most efficient" U.S. LRT systems. San Diego (LRT): $4.53 Salt Lake City (LRT): $4.89 San Francisco-BART (HRT): $5.40 Hiroshima-Miyajima Line (LRT, 1999): $5.46 Chicago (HRT): $5.67 Atlanta (HRT): $5.86 Komaki "Peachliner" (ICTS): $6.24 Tokyo-Saitama "New Shuttle" (ICTS): $6.31 New York-NYCT (HRT): $6.47 Hiroshima "Astram Line" (ICTS): $6.49 Philadelphia-PATCO (HRT): $6.95 Kitakyushu-Chikuho El Ry (LRT): $7.36 Memphis (streetcar): $7.61 Denver (LRT): $7.66 St. Louis (LRT): $7.75 Yokohama "Kanazawa Seaside Line" (ICTS): $7.93 Takaoka (streetcar): $8.16 Portland (LRT): $8.18 Washington, DC (HRT): $8.47 Miami (HRT): $8.50 Baltimore (HRT): $8.69 Sacramento (LRT): $8.70 Tokyo "Yurikamome" (ICTS): $9.04 Boston (HRT): $9.43 Kobe "Portliner" and Rokkoliner" (ICTS): $9.61 Nagasaki (streetcar): $10.16 Kochi (streetcar): $10.29 Tokyo Monorail: $10.38 Okayama (streetcar): $10.42 Baltimore (LRT): $10.50 Seattle Monorail: $10.88 Philadelphia-SEPTA (HRT): $10.90 New Orleans (streetcar): $10.96 Yukarigaoka (ICTS): $11.33 Matsuyama (streetcar, 1999) 11.53 Toyohashi (streetcar, 1999): $11.54 New York-PATH (HRT): $11.64 Shonan Monorail: $11.97 Toyama (streetcar, 1999): $11.99 Kitakyushu Monorail: $12.07 Cleveland (HRT): $12.11 Jacksonville (ICTS): $12.29 New York-Staten Island (HRT): $12.48 Osaka "New Tram" (ICTS): $12.76 Philadelphia-SEPTA (LRT): $12.80 Hiroshima-Urban lines (streetcar, 1999): $12.90 Los Angeles (HRT): $13.05 Los Angeles (LRT): $13.18 Cleveland (LRT): $13.21 Tokyo-Toei (streetcar): $13.38 Dallas (LRT): $13.58 Kumamoto (streetcar): $13.68 Tokyo-Seibu Ry Yamaguchi Line (ICTS): $13.70 Enoshima El Ry (LRT): $14.01 Boston (LRT): $14.09 Kagoshima (streetcar): $14.24 Osaka-Sakai (streetcar): $15.05 Pittsburgh (LRT): $15.25 Miami-Metromover (ICTS): $15.26 San Jose (LRT): $15.76 Osaka Monorail: $16.08 Buffalo (LRT): $16.22 Tokyo-Eidan (HRT): $16.74 Yokohama (HRT): $17.02 Gifu (streetcar, 1999): $17.07 Kobe (HRT): $17.21 Sapporo (HRT): $17.23 Tokyo-Toei (HRT): $17.36 Hakodate (streetcar): $18.21 Kyoto-Keifuku El Ry (streetcar, 1999): $18.98 Tokyo-Tama Monorail: $19.05 Nagoya (HRT): $19.23 Osaka (HRT): $19.36 Osaka-OTS Line (ICTS): $19.77 Newark-Jersey City (NJT LRT): $20.64 San Francisco-Muni (LRT): $21.53 Otsu-Keihan El Ry (LRT, 1999): $22.03 Sapporo (streetcar): $22.23 Tokyo-Tokyu Corp (streetcar, 1999): $22.57 Chiba Monorail: $24.47 Sendai (HRT): $26.26 Inuyama "Meitetsu Monkeyu Park Monorail": $27.59 Detroit (ICTS): $28.44 Seattle Waterfront Streetcar: $31.85 Hiroshima-Skyrail System (ICTS): $35.07 Fukuoka (HRT): $35.70 Kyoto (HRT): $42.42 Tokyo-Toei -- Ueno Park Monorail (1999): $63.84 Nagoya-Guideway Bus: $77.33 Unfortunately, we do not have data for operating cost per vehicle-hour for the Japanese systems. Also, the costs above have not been adjusted for differences in vehicle size. Monorail and ICTS vehicles are substantially smaller than HRT and LRT vehicles. Sendai, Fukuoka and Kyoto subway "operating expenses" MAY include finance charges on the debt issued for the local share of construction costs. (We TransitCabalists may be opinionated, but we don't know everything!)
