Noote that the Japanese subways carry a larger number of pass-mi per veh-mi than U.S. heavy-rail systems. This stems from very high levels of peak-hour crowding and land-use patterns which tend to distribute short-distance trips over the length of the line rather than concentrating them at one end (or the middle, in the case of lines that run "through" the CBD).
